House breaking a dog with separation anxiety

Question
4mth old Bisou and Havanese.  Great dog but if I crate him he drools himself wet in just 5 mins and chews the crate until his mouth is bloody.  He also pees and poops everywhere. He is never in the crate for more than a couple of hours.  He will pee while he is laying down and you don't see it until he gets up. He gets lots of exercise outside with the kids and me and then he comes in to the house and pees.  I have taken him out every hour and still he prefers the house.  I have restricted his food and water so that I can control when he should have to go outside but that hasn't worked either.  He has such a wonderful personality but I may have to give him up unless I can get this fixed.  He was in a pet shop for over 1 mth when I got him.  Help!!!

Answer
I've offered answers on this topic before. Every dog owner has to start with basic obedience. That sets the stage for any future training. House breaking a dog that has leared to just pee and poop in its cage at a pet store or other source has to learn where and when to go. Take the dog outside on a lead and find a spot where you wnat him to go. Then wait until he does. Parise his effort, then take him back in the house. Use the same location each time as he has marked it with his scent. I the house, you will have to remove all traces of scent. Not easy. It takes bleach, odo-ban and a product called Nature's Miracle. You may find NM at a large pet stores, farm store, TSC, and Odo-Ban is sold at Wal-Mart/Sams Club. Keep the dog on easy to clean surfaces, ceramic tile, or other non absorbant flooring. If you catch him in the act you can say NO BAD DOG, and immediately take him to the outside spot. If its after the fact, don't bother becuase the dog has no recollection of what it did 10 seconds ago. I've known people who's dogs took a year to potty train. There are lots of books at the pet stores and the other book stores on housebreaking your pet.

I am assuming you have checked with a vet to make sure there is no medical problem, and be sure the dog is on the right diet. Not all dogs do well on any food. If the stool is loose or there is a lot of flatulance you need to change the diet. We've found Pedigree best for most dogs, and there are other brands. Generally the cheap foods have a lot of filler which just leave a lot of bulk to clean up.
