Question
I have a staffy cross who I recently got as a rescue dog.  She is aged around 2-3yrs although I do not know her history.
I have a 1 year old nephew who has just started to walk.  My dog is exactly the same height as him and whenever he toddles past my dog licks his face until either he falls over or gets lifted out of the way.  The dog has never been aggressive, it's just licking but I want her to stop this.  I've been told not to tell the dog off when she does it so that she doesn't experience the baby with negative experiences so have just been keeping hold of either the dog or the baby to keep them separate.

Is there any way I can stop this licking?
Thank you very much

Answer
I'd agree the dog shouldn't be punished for this - I would carefully supervise and have the dog on leash. When he starts licking the baby, redirect him to do something else ( a trick, sit, give you attention)Of course, with any dog, especially medium to large dogs, a baby or toddler should never be left unsupervised with the dog. Sometimes toddlers can poke an eye, grab and ear or tail, or fall over the dog, and even the gentlest dog can react badly. Sandy Case MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
