Puggle sleep

Question
Hello:
We just rescued a PUGGLE from across the country and he is wonderful, but Emmett has not let me get a a real night of sleep in 2 weeks.
Anytime I try to remove myself from anywhere that he is, all we hear is intense crying, moaning and he will follow me ANYWHERE!
When it is bed time, he has a bed right in our bed room , but has never used it. He consistently jumps on our bed and sleeps there. The problem is he only sleeps for and hour or 2 and then begins to lick my face (to wake me) or moan and cry. I end up picking him up and taking him downstairs and usually fall asleep on the couch with him, until he waked me again.
Can you please help me with any information you could share?
I am exhausted and just want the best for Emmett (puggle) and myself!

Thank you!

Answer
I would teach him to go to his bed and lie down. when he looks at his bed - click or say "yes" (clicking is better) and toss a treat. When he is doing that, reward for moving towards it (maybe just one step at first) and continue until he is going to it. Have the bed near you, and encourage him to hang out on it by dropping treats to him there. Do NOT reward pushy, attention demanding behavior with any attention - that includes negative attention like trying to push him away - it's still attention. I'd get a short-ish cable, and get him used to being tethered near you, and when that's accomplished, tether him near his bed so he can't jump on yours. It may take a few nights for him to accept this (after all, demanding attention and jumping on your bed has worked for a while!) But it will go more smoothly if you rehearse it in the daytime when you aren't trying to sleep. Sandy Case MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
