Question
Hi,
We adopted a shelter dog 3 years ago who was 18-24 months at the time.
Pippin is a terrier mix, maybe rat, maybe jack russell. He may also be
basenji or cattle. He's 35 lbs.
We have always walked him twice per day (he's a regular 2 poops per day
doggy) and he gets some yard time on a leash, too, most days. We have
finally been able to get a fence and would like to get him to go outside in
the yard. We have tried to put his poop in a corner. Also, the neighbor dogs
have visited and pooped in the yard. We bagged that up, too, and put it near
his. The only time he has ever pooped in the yard was when he had a bit of
the diarrhea last summer. Otherwise, his poop radius is 2-3 blocks from the
house. We really want him to go in the yard during the winter months once
per day.
We read the suggestion of going out there with him on a leash and will
begin to incorporate that. Have also begun praise with all yard pees. We
realize patience will also be needed. But, how to get the message to him?
Please let us know if you have any other suggestions.
Cynthia

Answer
Definately go out with him, but give him some distance. I'd take him out in the yard at the time when he's used to going for a walk. Feed on a regular schedule so you know when he needs to go. I think you are on the right track, and yes, it may take some patience to break old habits. Sandy Case BFA MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
