Question
I have a 4 year old neutered male American Eskimo named Frosty. I currently live in an apartment with Frosty, and my landlord has been getting upset with Frosty's barking.  Frosty has a habit of barking at just about every noise he hears.  He tends to stop barking when I tell him to, but then will start barking again shortly after.  I have tried the bark collars, but they did not work with him.  I was wondering how I can get him to stop barking all of the time.  I appreciate any help that you can give me.  Thank you.

Answer
What is the trigger to start the barking?  Is it asking for attention, guarding, just a barky dog?  When you figure out the trigger, then you can counter train the dog to not bark. As you found, most of the bark collars don't work. Most increase the barking. This is one of the few instances an electronic collar might work, allowing you to distract the dog remotely as soon as it starts to bark. A better method is to train the dog to be quiet by rewarding it for periods of quiet.  The opposite of reward is no reward. So order the dog to stop barking. When it is quiet, GOOD DOG, NO BARK and give it a tiny treat. Lengthen the period before reward to increase the quiet period. If the dog is just bored, then provide mental and physical stimulis with dog puzzle toys, rawhide chews, and other thinking toys.
