Question
We have just adopted a 2-3 year old male pitbull who is very docile and lovable.  We already own two dogs: a 3 year old female maltipoo and a 3 year old male bichon.  The male bichon is very agressive toward the pitbull who virtually ignores him.  What can we do to ensure they all get along. Can this situation work ?Right now we separate them but sit with them on leashes at the opposite ends of the porch.  Please Help! Thank you

Answer
You didn't mention if the dogs are neutered. If not they should be to control their competitive male hormones. The Bichon could be jealous or fearful. In either event, you need to reassure it that you love it, and pay a little more attention to it for a while.

You didn't mention if the dogs had been obedience trained. They need to be as socializing is a big part of that process and helps dogs get along with other known and strange dogs and people.

You can also set up a training routine where the Bichon sees the pitbull, but then get the Bichon's attention immediately and get it to play, favorite toy or very small treat. The idea is to get the Bichon to associate good things with the sight of the pitbull. Meanwhile, don't let them fight.
