Puppy not liking his crate

Question
Hi my name is Christina I am a new puppy owner his name is Jake.  Jake is now 16 weeks old and he has lived with me for 5 weeks oh and he is a shihpoo.
My issue is his crate!!  I keep his crate in my room close to my bed sleeping is not an issue he actually will go in on his own I close the door and usually don't hear from him for 7 hours.  During the day when i have to go to work is the problem!!  The first issue is he knows what is coming when i have to pick him up and carry him to my room I can feel his heart start to race.  As soon as i place him in the crate he tries to turn as fast as he can to get out.  Then when i walk out of the room he carries on as if someone was killing him.  It is so heart breaking for me to have to keep walking.  I have never once gone back and tried to comfort him nor have I ever gone back and left him out.  Everything that I have read has told me not to do that.  I have tried treats, kongs, T-shirts I have worn, favorite toys and treats are still in the crate when I return.  I am not sure how long the barking continues i did time it one time and it was about 40 mins.  That is the first week that I had him.  He is usually settled to the point of not barking when i return and that is never longer then 4 hours.  Any advice would be welcomed I am willing to try anything!

Answer
Christina, I guess we can understand his reluctance to go into the crate.  Being crated all day AND all night isn't much fun for a dog.  There's no exercise or mental stimulation that can happen when a dog is crated.  HOWEVER, I fully understand the need for crating.  Protecting your house and your dog should be of utmost importance.  Crating during daytime hours should not last longer than 4-5 hours at a time, so you're doing fine there.

During the daytime hours, I recommend an exercise pen. Here's my blog entry on using one when my girl was a pup:  http://raisingpip.blogspot.com/2010/05/housetraining.html.  These come in various sizes and heights.  Since your dog is small, I would get one that's big enough to put his crate in (door open) and allow him to have some room to stretch his legs as well.  The big box pet stores might carry these, but they are also available online.  Sometimes feed stores that carry a lot of dog products will have these, too.  The x-pen will be less restricting for the dog and you can put his food bowl, chew toys, stuffed Kong and some toys as well.

Have the x-pen set up all the time and allow him to come and go just like the crate.  Plant great treats in there when he's not looking so he can discover them on his own.  Get him used to staying in the pen while you're at home. Put it in a place where he can see you.  Feed some meals in there, too.

Be sure the pup is exercised before you leave in the morning.  If he's a bit tired, he's likely to settle more quickly to take a nap.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.  Good luck!
