dog howling when i leave him

my 14 yr old cocker spaniel appears to have separation, anxiety problems...whenever i leave without him he begans to howl...when i leave him alone at home & i return under his chin down his neck is wet...he immediately goes to water & drinks as though he is dehydrated..is there any help for this...soon my season comes in & i will have to leave him some days all day...i love this dog & want to keep him...but right now he is at a friends adjusting to their home...if he adjust i may have to give him up!...HELP!

The dog is 14 years old, and did not have this problem before?  I would try to find a dog day care or someone to watch him during the day while you're gone.  There may also be medications from your vet that will help, such as anti-anxiety.  A 14 year old dog doesn't have a good chance of adjusting to a totally new home or even finding one, so I hope you keep him.
