sudden pooping in house

Question
We have had a rescued dog, Zeke, for the past 3 months.  He has been fully housebroken since we got him. Recently however,he has started pooping in the house. We make sure he has gone before we bring him back in the house, and within an hour, he poops in the same place in the living room.  He suffers from separation anxiety and has been on medication for two months.  The separation issues seem to have decreased, but now the pooping has started.  Any suggestions you can give would be appreciated.  thanks

Answer
Sometimes issues arise that require you to sort of go back to square one with housebreaking. I have had clients tell me that their dogs reverted in housebreaking when they took certain medications and this may be the issue here but since it started some time after the medication started it may not be. Sometimes we just can't tell what's going on in our dogs' heads, we just need to address the behavior.

I suggest that you will need to confine him to a crate or other small area when he cannot be watched and restrict his access to his preferred pooping spot for awhile. My article at http://www.thegooddogjournal.com/2008/11/housebreaking-made-easy.html should give you some pointers.
