Dog jealousy

Question
About a year and a half ago we rescued a female Irish Setter. She was doing fine then about five months ago we rescued a male Irish Setter who was in very bad shape both physically and emotionally.  Now he seems to be on the path to better health but the female has definitely changed.  She is no doubt the dominant dog but is very very jealous.  If we are petting the newer one she butts in and demands all the attention for herself.  I have tried making sure she is petter first.  When we head out for our daily run I make sure she is out of the door before the other one.  Etc. Etc.  Now she is at the point that she will start a fight or some sort of ruckus.  We are at our wits end.  Can you help?

Answer
It's not unusual for a dog to get their nose out of joint over a new canine family member.  I would switch off petting and treats between the two dogs. If she gets pushy with him, simply remove yourself from the situation. Get up and leave. I would also up the structure in her life, and her obedience skills, so she learns that you make the rules, instead of her, and so you can redirect her when she starts to bully him. If she's just roaring and making displays, I would do these things. If she is actually injuring the male, I'd seek professional help from someone who can evaluate the situation in person.
