My dog barks & keeps us up all night!

Question
Thank you Emily for any consideration you give this question. My 8 yr old Toy Pom has a severe bladder problem and has for years. It was an off and on problem but is now an everyday occurance. We recently (3 weeks ago) began keeping him in a large pin beside our bed at night to prevent him from relieving himself all over our house. The problem is that he is constantly whining and barking for our attention- the ENTIRE night. I've tried everything- keeping him in the guestroom, the kitchen, the bathroom, turning a large fan on to cover his bark, playing him hard before putting him to bed...and NOTHING works! We've lost too many nights of sleep because of him and I am worried my husband is going to give him away, or worse- put him to sleep. Is this an anxiety problem? Is it emotional or physical stress? My husband thinks he's just spoiled. It seems to come only from him being confined. Is there ANYTHING I can do?! I'm desperate, Please help! Thank you, Lauren.

Answer
Wow. I am thinking that this pom was never crate trained and if he was as a pup he hasn't been in one for a long time. And you husband is probably a little right(but we ALL spoil our dogs a little). If you cannot stand his barking AT ALL and need an immediate solution, use doggie diapers. If it is only urine then you can try one made just for males(It looks like a strap that goes around their tummy and then velcros or buttons close), or if you think he will pull that off try the one for females. It might be a little more secure depending on what you buy. It works by placing a sanitary pad(one made for dogs) in it then placing it on your dog. That way he can run around the house at night, you can sleep and not worry about waking up to a pee soaked carpet. I hope i have helped and if you need anymore questions answered just ask. Sending many happy tail wags your way.
