Answer
Hi Patti,

Nursing is the most physically stressful time for a dog. She has very demanding nutritional needs until her pups are weaned.

Basically, feed your dog anything she'll eat, and let her eat as much as she wants. Many times when a dog is nursing, food is just left out all the time, so the dog can eat whenever she wants to.

Try scrambled eggs, grated hard boiled eggs, cottage cheese, pasta, boiled chicken or turkey, chopped meat, beef liver, heart or kidney. The more aromatic you make the food, the more likely your dog will be to eat it. Canned dog food is sometimes more tempting than dry. Also try warming the food a little to entice her. Warming releases more of the food's odors. Feeding your dog by hand sometimes helps to "jump start" a dog into eating.

There are also calorie enhancers made for dogs that are ill, that help keep weight on. Products to look for are: K9 Restart Energy Bars, Enercal High Calorie Gel, and Nutrical Gel.

I hope I've been a help!
Best of luck,

Patti
