dog mourning

Question
on nov 5th, my silky terrier (Syd) and my shih tzu (Sam) were running along a fence.  Sam was nipping at Syds heels.  SYd turned his head to get Sam away.  Syd's slowing down, and Sam's continued momentum caused them to roll over each other, breaking Syd's neck and his dying within a few moments.  Both dogs came from the same breeder and had spent their entire lives together.  Both were about 2 1/2 years old, and we had both for 1 week over two years.
Sam is now lethargic, not eating and appears sad.  What can we do to help him through this?
Thank you for your assistance.
Tom and Sarah

Answer
Hi Tom & Sarah,
I am very sorry to hear of your loss and Sam's loss as well.  As with most people, the easiest way to get through a loss is to get another dog for Sam.  I would consult with the breeder and see what she would suggest but maybe another Shih tzu would be best.
You might also try signing up for a local obedience class, (not just for learning to sit ) at your vets or PetsMart, this will give Sam something interesting to do and will help keep him active and this will combat the depression.  Best regards, Dawn Hoppe & Tina K-9
