Boxers ears

Question
Max is a 2 1/2 yr old boxer male that we purchased as a puppie from a local breeder. About 6 months ago we noticed when he would shake his head there were tiny drops of blood on whatever he was next to. His ear(on the tip)had broken open. This will clot up and heal, and then a few days later it is open again. We have dressed the wound and put "the cone" on him(man he hates that), but a few days later he will get it opened back up. The vet was not very helpful, and only said she might be able to trim the edge of the ear, and close it back up. If you have any advise or suggestions on this I would appreciate it. Thanks

Answer
Hi Brett,

Yeah, and if she trims THAT ear, then she would have to trim the other ear too!  That would be my last resort!
Instead of doing that, why couldn't she just put a  samll stitch in that area?  Sometimes vets just kill me, they don't seem to have any common sense.  (don't tell her I said that though...lol)

I know this sounds crazy, but have you tried a small bandaid? If you can get those small ones, maybe it won't bother him too badly.  The thing would be , getting it to stick. I don't know if that will work, but it might be worth a try.  If it could be kept on long enough to heal a little.  I woudl think that the cone would make him shake his head even worse.  Those are good if they keep scratching at their ears, but not so good to keep them from shaking their head.

Another thought, is that they now have "liquid bandages" that is like a glue that will mend the skin together. You could ask your vet about that too, but I know it's kinda costly.  You could compare that to the price of another stitch or two.  If he would be still, she might be able to put the stitches in without sedation, only a local, but then.... we're talking about a boxer puppy, so be still?  LOL

Gee, I hope you are able to fix this problem. I hope this has helped a little bit.  Boxers are such cool dogs, I just love them and have a friend that breedas them.

God Bless,
Becky
