Dachshund Urinating in Crate

Question
Hi:

We have a happy, healthy, two year old crate trained dachshund named Mr. Darcy.  We typically take up his water around 8PM, walk him around 11PM, and he goes to bed in his crate soon after that. We get him up around 6AM or so and he immediately goes out and urinates with no problem.

Lately, Mr. Darcy is starting to urinate in his crate on his blankets.  We've tried getting up somewhat earlier but he still occasionally urinates in the crate.  He seems healthy and playful otherwise.  He also no longer calls us in the morning by barking if he needs to go out before we get up.  We understood that dogs will not normally urinate in their crates.  He has been fine up to this point.

Any thoughts or advice on this sudden unusual behavior?  Thanks for your help.

Jim

Answer
I would suggest monitoring the water intake of your dog. Do not deprive him of any water, simply record how much he is drinking each day for a few days. This urination could indicate renal (kidney) problems, diabetes, bladder problems, etc... so if the condition doesn't get better you would need to take him to see your veterinarian as soon as possible. He may simply be upset that he is having to stay in his crate. Many times animals learn that if they urinate in their crate that they will get to come out of it while you are cleaning it. He also may have other behavioral problems and could simply not be getting enough play time. I would suggest reducing the amount of time the dog stays in the crate if possible and increasing the amount of time that you spend with him. Not only is this good for him and you, it also will allow you to keep a better watch on him and see if he is acting like he doesn't feel good at any time. Record the water he drinks and if you feel you should take him to your vet be sure to take the record you have made about how much he is drinking, it can help with the vet's diagnosis.
