Removing Dewclaws at 2 weeks old?

Question
How are you doing. I just recently had a litter of Siberian Husky puppies. There are a couple with the dewclaws on the back legs. I was wondering if it was too late to get them removed. My sister who works as a vet Tech said the vet said that its still only cartilidge and that it wont be bad to do it now. She said that she would give the pup a shot too numb it up a little then remove them. Is this ok to do and will it bleed quiet a bit?

Answer
Hi Daniel,

Removal of the dew claws is easiest soon after birth because they're still like fingernails at that age, than appendages. At that young age, dew claws can be removed relatively easily and no stitches are required.

Your sister is correct, if done withing the first fews days of life, dew claw removal only requires a local anesthetic. Most dew claw removal is bloodless and painless. Vet uses Nexabond skin glue to close the skin after dew claw is removed. Within a few minutes of the removal they're back with their mom and nursing happily.

If your sister will use sterile instruments, and a prescribed antibiotic in removal of the dew claws, there's no  reason to have a vet do this procedure.

Best of luck,
Patti
