Runny, bloodshot eyes

My precious, 1 1/2 year old German Shepherd/rottweiler/ect. has bloodshot eyes that I noticed this morning after a run. When I got home this afternoon there was an awful lot of eyegoop hanging around. At first I figured the bloodshot eyes were from a scratch or some other irritation but the discharge scares me a little. Could this be serous?

Anytime there is an issue with a dog's eyes, they should be examined by a veterinarian since there is the potential for vision loss if the problem goes untreated. This may be nothing more than a bit of conjunctivitis, but it might be something more serious, so take your dog in and have his eyes looked at.
