Swollen genital in female pom

Question
My pom started her period roughly a week or more ago and her genital has become very swollen lately. This did not happen during her previous bleedings or at least it didn't swell to the case it is now. She used to do her business in the house but since we've moved we've had her pee outdoors more and am afraid that chemical or maybe a bug has bitten her or infected her. Please let me know what could possibly be the problem. Thanks much!

Answer
Hi Bo,

The swollen genital area you've been seeing on your dog is a normal part of entering the heat cycle. You might also see an  increased restlessness and there may be increased urination.

You've asked what can be done done about the problem. Unless you are a professional dog breeder you should spay the dog. Some vets will spay a dog while it's in heat.

There are health benefits to spaying your dog.

- Spaying female dogs eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of mammary cancer.

- Spayed/neutered animals live longer on average than intact animals and their overall health is better.

- Spaying reduces or eliminates false pregnancies, serious bacterial uterine infections and hormonal imbalances which sometimes lead to kidney failure.

- And of course, spaying prevents complications and dangers of giving birth.

I hope I've been a help.
