Question
Becky, Yes I did talk to you once before in regard to a rabis shot. It was probably the end of December 2005 or Jan. of 2006.  They put her to sleep just as they did with your cat.  I held her in my arms as she was being put to sleep. Prior to receiving the first shot she kissed me on my nose a couple of times. I told the Vet that I wanted to take her with me.  They put her in a box with a towel.  I took her to the Pet Cemetery and had her cremated.  They do single cremations and I will pick up her ashes tomorrow and bring her home.  We loved that dog so much and I too, cried.  Thank you so much for the help you gave me now and the help you gave me before.

Hi Becky,
I sent you a question on Aug. 7th about whether or not it was time to put down my dog.  I could not read your answer. I typed in the address shown in the email but each time it went back to the home page of allexperts.

As it is, I took the dog to the vet Monday Morning and she was put to sleep.

Thank You.

Joe,
I know it's too late, but I found my original reply in case you would like to read it.

Answer:  Hi Joe!
I have talked to you before I think.  It is so hard when the time comes to let our pets go.  I know, I have been there.  But you are right, you don't want her to suffer.  She probably, at this point, is not really suffering but if she is losing control of her bladder and bowells then it won't be long. It is really up to you how long you want to put it off.  If she is not really suffering, then I don't see any rush. If she stops eating completley and begins to look bad, or cannot get up and down, then it's time to put her down.  I only recently had to put down a beloved cat that I have had for 14 years.  When I took her to the Vet, they were kind enough to give her an injection first to totally relax her.  This was very considerate of them, because when they gave her the injection that would put her down, she was not scared and it didn't upset her.  I was very grateful.  I stayed with her the whole time.  Many people choose not to be with their pet in the final moments but I prefer to do so.  It is your choice and you can let them know what you prefer.  Do not let them tell you that you cannot be there if you want to be.  Since my cat was so relaxed, it was very easy on her, and it was just like she fell asleep.  They left me alone with her to give my last goodbyes.  Yes, it was hard and Yes I cried, but I knew that I gave her the very best life she could ever have had and I have no regrets.  I know this will be very hard for you and your wife but try to comfort one another knowing that you also gave your little Pom a good life too.  You guys are just great , I think , to have had that little dog for all these years without your landlord finding out!

Answer
Joe,

That is so sweet the way she kissed you "goodbye".  Oh,what we put ourselves through when we get a pet and fall in love, but it's all worth it, isn't it?  At least we know that we gave our pets a good life, and they weren't out running around and getting hit by a car or something tragic as that!  I hope that after awhile, you will consider getting another pet.  I'm sure you guys can "smuggle" in another little pup!  lol

God Bless,
Becky
