Im just curious... Why are dogs gums and lips black?

most dogs gums are pink though some have what could be considered birthmarks on there gums which are black, many breeds have lips that are black but not all.
the truth is that melanin in the skin causes the coloration of the skin, in dogs this can create various colorations which may also be subject to conditions in the mom before birth.
