My Shihtzu has problem

Question
I have had my dog to the Vet. several times, I have even had him to more than one.  For about the last 6 months he has been having a problem from time to time that comes and goes quickly.  His teeth chatter and he foams at the mouth.  This may last anywhere from 2-8 minutes in duration.  The Vet has no clue what is wrong, as he never does it when he is at the Vets.  The Vet has even looked at me Like I was crazy.  Do you have any idea what may be causing this?  Should I worry about this condition.  The dog is only about 4 years old and has not been fixed.  He has only a past medical history of a hernia from birth that he had surgery to repair.  He also had a UTI one time.  Other than that no other known problems.  If you can help I would appreciate it.

Answer
Hi Heather,  It sounds like your dog is having seizures.  They sound mild though.  What I would do is start keeping track of each time they happen and marking it on the calendar.  Write down what the dog was doing before it happened, how long they last etc.  If you start seeing them happen more frequently, you can take that into a vet and show them the frequency of their happenings.  These probably won't ever happen in front of a vet.  They are not that predicatble.  But at least the vet can see what is going on as you have kept a log of them and maybe then they will put the dog on medication.  You don't need medication unless they get more frequent or violent.  Hope this helps,
