Hi,

I have a giant schnauzer thats now a year old this week & for the past  6 or 7 months shes been limping pretty bad on her right front paw.. Ive looked at it and cant find anything wrong but shes always limping on it.. Ive taken her to the vet several times over it but he just keeps saying its growing pain .. He has not taken Ex-rays even tho Ive asked him too..

She still runs on it but if she uses it to much she will scream in pain and hold it up . She also holds it forward when standing.. & while running she hobbles around trying to keep from using it.. Do growing pains last almost a year ?

When we try to keep her off of it she does get better but keeping a Giant Schnauzer still is near impossible.. We did have a problem with her climbing over the fence when she was 9- 12 weeks old .. We just gave up and had to keep her in eye sight after that.  Do you have any idea what could be wrong with her ?

Thanks so much

Hi Tina,  It sounds like your dog has panostitis.  That is basically growing pains in dogs and is very common in giant breeds.  It can keep acting up until the dog is two years old.  The treatment is to keep the dog quiet when it is acting up and to not let the dog over exercise as that can aggravate it more.  If she is using it, then it isn't broken, and that is the only thing the x-ray will show.  Hope this helps,

Dawn

Answer
Hi Tina,  Dysplasia is in the hips, not the front paw.  Pano acts up even when they are not doing that much exercise, it's just that exercise can make it worse.  There is always a possibility that she has elbow dysplasia, but you don't usually see limping with that, especially at that young of an age.  If you are still concerned, you can take her to another vet and get x-rays done to rule out elbow dysplasia.  Pano won't show up on x-rays (thats how you know its Pano, when nothing else really shows).  Hope this helps,

Dawn
