Old Dog New Strange Behavior

Question
I have a large mixed breed dog. We adopted him as an adult and believe he is around 8 years old. He has always been nervous during thunderstorms, pacing and panting, waking us up at night.  Lately however he has been displaying the same behavior, pacing and panting at night even though there is no sign of a storm.  We have tried letting him outside, offering him water, nothing helps. His health during the day seems to be normal. He is active, has a good appetite and seems to be going to the bathroom normally. He doesn't appear to be sick in any way.
Do you have any thoughts on what could be causing this new behavior?

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for writing to me about your dog and his anxiety issues.

When a dog displays the type of behavior you are describing, I always suggest that you ask your vet to do a thorough exam as well as a full blood workup, paying special attention to any thyroid issues.

As far as his growing fears, you can try the following:

1- Place 12 drops of Rescue Remedy into his water bowl.  When he begins to exhibit anxiety, rub some Rescue Remedy onto his gums.

2- Purchase an Anxiety Wrap.  Originally they were designed for thunderstorm anxieties but it was soon discovered that they helped with many other kinds of anxiety issues.  You can find one on SitStay.com/

3- Your dog may need to take anti-anxiety medication.  I have seen it work miracles.
