Question
I have 5 dogs and two of the older dogs attack the smaller younger dogs when they get close to them. The older dogs about two years old and the younger about 6 to 8 months. Are my older dogs Jealous.
What is the proper way to stop this behavior. I scold the older dogs when I catch them doing this, but doesn't stop them.

Answer

Hi Fred,

No doubt, you've tried different ways of trying to prevent these attacks. Because nothing has worked for you, it's probably best to consult with a dog behaviorist at this time. Having a professional evaluate your dogs, as well as your responses with the dogs, would give you the best results in the shortest amount of time.

Ask your vet or local boarding kennels for a referral for a dog behaviorist. If you can't get a referral, you may be able to locate a behaviorist here:

Until your dogs can be evaluated, you should separate them at times that are particularly stressful, such as by feeding them separately, and not letting stressful situations get out of control so that attack happens. If necessary, keep the known aggressor(s) on their leashes in the house, so that you stop attacks before they even happen. If the attacks draw blood, then the aggressor needs to wear a muzzle. A wire basket style muzzle is the most humane, allowing the dog to drink water while it's worn.

Part of the problem is that 5 dogs is a pack of dogs, and they are trying to establish their social status within the pack. You need to establish yourself as the true pack leader who must be obeyed. There is a simple training regimen called Nothing In Life Is Free, you can read about how to practice this training method here:

Nothing In Life Is Free probably won't stop the problem but it will be helpful, until you can find a good behaviorist.

Best of luck,

Patti
