Question
Hi Labman,
I have a 1 yr old lab and last week he started a new behavior and I'm wondering what I can do.whenever I leave. he goes in my room and gets a piece of my clothing and lays it by the door.also my sons clothes. I assume he doesn't like the fact that we left. and i think he's sad. is he? and can i help him not be?
thanks in advance

Answer
Dogs are hardwired to be part of a pack.  It is very confusing for them to be left alone.  Perhaps the best solution is more quality time with him when you can be around.  Even stagger your absences if you can.  Leave shopping go evenings when one of you is out of the house for something else.  Give the dog as much attention while doing other things as you can.  While reading his homework assignments or watching TV, your son could be rubbing the dog's belly.  Do obedience training or get into agility.  Visit the dog park if you have one.
