Question
we have a st bernard about 1yr old and we want to know how much and how often we should be feeding him
thanks

Answer
Hi Kristy,

An adult St. Bernard consumes about the same amount of food as an active adult Labrador Retriever. It's best to feed large dogs like a St. Bernard two or more times per day.  The practice of less more often is a good way to avoid bloat from occurring in a deep chested large breed of dog. Bloat is a life threatening medical condition.

Whatever dog food you're using no doubt has feeding recommendations based on the dog's weight and activity level on the package. Follow the feeding guidelines that your particular food recommends, since it's different depending on the brand. The amount you feed can range from around 18 ounces, to 30 ounces of food daily.

If it looks like your dog is gaining weight because he's not very active, cut back on the daily volume of food, but not on the number of feeding times a day.

If you are feeding your dog a homemade diet, and not store bought dog food, you can find plenty of important nutritional information here:

I hope I've been a help.

Best of luck,
Patti
