Predicting when a dog goes into labor

19 11:48:45

Question
I was told that if you squeeze a dog's teat and milk leaks out that she will go into labor within 24 hours. Is this true?

Answer
Helen,

I've never heard of that, and I wouldn't rely on that information. The best way to determine if labor is imminent is to begin monitoring a dog's rectal temperature as her due date approaches. When it drops below 99 degrees Farenheit (a healthy temperature for a dog is between 101-102), labor should begin within 24 hours. If it doesn't you need to contact a veterinarian. Below is a link to an article with more information regarding canine pregnancy that outlines some other things that normally take place when labor is about to begin.
