Poddle with penis hanging out all the time

QUESTION: I have 2 yr old toy poddle his penis hangs out all the time. I have had him fixed and had a surgery where the vet was suppost to of extended the sheath but it still is hanging out and it is dry. Is there anything else I can do? please help I really want to be able to get it fixed it is very senitive to him. thanks brandie

ANSWER: I've never heard of the surgery you mentioned, but generally, when the penis cannot retract, it is because there is too much hair on the sheath, causing the sheath to sort of invert on itself so that the penis cannot retract. If this is the case, you need to gently pull the sheath out, and then extend it fully over the tip of the penis.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response! I have already tried to pull the sheath over the tip and it will cover for awhile but then it comes out again, do you have any other suggestions? Thanks for your time-Brandie

This is perfectly normal (male) dog behavior, for some reason. It is important to keep the hair short on the front part of the sheath, particularly on those dogs with a tendency to do this.... and check them daily. I would also be tempted to put a bit of Vaseline on the penis to try to "ease things along".
