My Three Dogs

Question
Hello,
Where do I begin.... I have two IG's and a Minpin.  Over a year ago we lost our 6 year old Minpin and decided to purchase another Minpin, part was to replace the void and the other part was the nature of Minpins.  My older IG Prince and Minpin Ceasar grew up together and of course Ceasar was the alpha dog, after we lost him (Ceasar)Prince was put in the roll of alpha dog, not by our choice, our other IG Monty is a rescue and he is a nervous nellie, but not alpha material.  Prince has been putting on weight and acts like he is starving, we thought it was thyroid and had him tested all tests came back normal.  So I switched dog food from Science Diet to Waltham then to Natural Balance (Dick Vanpattens).  I don't know if he is actually starving or he just wants all the food.. We feed him a 1/2 cup in the am and the same for supper and he does receive a treat before bedtime. (Old mother hubbard treats) Now the feces eating has been a problem in the past when our other Minpin was alive and this had finally dissolved to once in a great while.  Now Prince is eating feces like no tomorrow.  Our new Minpin Major is box trained and Prince never bothered the box until the past few weeks and Major can not even finish and Prince is right there while the feces are coming out.  I pick up all the time, but Prince will beat me to it. He don't eat his own, it is the other two dogs.  I talked with our vet about it and she stated that there is a product which is a meat tenderizer that we could try to use, but I am not sure about that due to it being a salt product.  I don't know if he is eating stools because he is hungry or because he can....

Answer
Try adding pineapple juice, canned pumpkin, Deter, or forbid.

You need to be the alpha.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
