Right dog for me?

Question
I've got an 8 week old black lab and have had him for almost 3 weeks.  I do not have a "set" schedule (work from home 3 days a week, 2 in office).  On the days that I am home, there is no issue, and I do have someone come to my home when I am not here for feedings and walking as I do put him in a cage when I'm not here.  I am a single person, but very active (I love outdoors).  I've heard that labs are good family dogs, but I don't have a family.  I'll often sit for my nephew who's 5 so he does have a playmate sometimes, but I need to know if I'm enough.  I've never owned a dog before and I'm nervous that I'm not enough for him.  Is a lab a good "single" person dog, or should I give him to an active "family" home?  I don't want to keep him if he would be better off with a family - and I know a family with 2 young (under 10) kids that would love to have him so I want to make the right decision.  Any help/info you can give is greatly appreciated as this is really bothering me.  Also, if your suggestion is to give him to a "family" home please give your advise on a better breed of dog for a "single" person.

Answer
All dogs are pack animals Becky. Labs are no different. But packs can be all sizes, and two is as good a number as ten. :)
Just be sure that you include your dog in your life. You're doing great so far, when he gets older, get him into a puppy socialization class. THen go from there into basic obedience. You may find a new love in training and working your dog. There is great satisfaction in this kind of bonding and it really creates a close relationship and an incredible experience. You might even go from training classes to shows who knows, and if not maybe you could branch out into some dog sports. Agility is awesome for an active individual and labs excell at it, as they do fly ball, frisbee and most other dog sports. Once he's done with his vaccinations and puppy socialization, start going to some dog parks a couple of times per week. As a young adult go from walking to running with him. PLAY with him, live with him and enjoy him. He will eat it up and flourish under the attention and love. I think you're on your way to being a wonderful pack for your puppy. Don't even consider letting him go. ENJOY, I know he will
