Question
I am about to purchase a chihuahua from a breeder who said the dog has nystagmus.  She said it won't affect his life span or quality of life but that it causes quivering of the eyes when he is nervous or scared and that no meds are needed. And that its typically seen in older dogs. She has reduced the price generously, but before I make this purchase- is she accurate in her statements? I'm very interested in him even if he his a special needs puppy, but I need to know exactly what I'm getting my family into. Thanks.

Answer
Actually nystagmus is a symptom of what can be very serious neurological issues. Please check out this website prior to making your decision.
Good luck, I know you will do what is best for both this little guy and your family,

This problem is rarely just associated with the eyes but most often accompanies other neurological issues from vestibular disase, to trauma, to epilepsy., Just so that you are aware that this is very likely the early stages of any one of many serious problems.
