Question
QUESTION: hello
I was wondering how do you train your puppy not to poop or pee inside the house?
Also how do you train your dog tricks?

Please write back as soon as possible
Thank you

ANSWER: To housebreak a puppy, it must be crate-trained and confined when it cannot be watched. It must go outside immediately after waking, eating, and playing, and praised when it potties in the right spot outside. Young puppies must go outside every 20-30 minutes. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1548&articleid=157

There are several books available on how to teach tricks. It does help if the dog has had some obedience training first, but a puppy can also be taught to do some tricks. The following websites have a few tricks you can teach your dog.

QUESTION: hi
what is a bely band for male dogs and why do we use it for male dogs?
Can a puppy use a bely band?
and how do you crate train a puppy
Thank you

Answer
A bellyband is a cloth strap that is put around a male's abdomen to collect urine if he cannot be housebroken and marks in the house. No, this is not something one would use on a puppy as one's goal is to housebreak a dog so that it will only potty outside. One does NOT want to change a bellyband several times a day unless one has to.  http://www.showpaps.com/bellybands.html

Cratetraining is pretty easy. When I start that with a new puppy, I put it in the crate for a few hours and go shopping so that I don't have to hear the puppy crying. All meals are fed in the crate so that the puppy learns to love being in there. The crate is used at night and during the day for the puppy's naps and whenever he cannot be watched. As he gets older and better behaved, he is left loose more and more. Eventually dogs here are crated only when I am gone or at night. Some have proven that they are completely trustworthy and are loose all the time, and sleep in my bedroom, but those dogs are usually well over a year of age before I start giving them more freedom. http://www.barkbytes.com/training/crate.htm
