Question
Is it possible to train a 13 year old male shizu mix to use potty pads? When we work all day, I can usually get home during lunch to let him out.   Now that he's getting older, I would like to see if I can pad train him as well.

Answer
Hi Jackie,

It may be possible to train your elderly dog to use pads, newspapers, or a dog litter box. A lot depends on your dog. It can be difficult to retrain a 13 year-old dog after a lifetime of being trained NOT to go in the house. It could be really hard for your dog to get this concept in his elder years.

Though not nearly as inexpensive as pads, another option is to use the Pet-A-Potty system. It feels like grass, so it may be more attractive to your dog who's used to "going" outside. See this product here:

If you give the potty pads a try, it might be helpful to use Simple Solution Potty Training Aid. This product helps train a puppy or dog to urinate in the appropriate area. You just spray the product on newspaper or the potty pad to attract the dog to the spot.
It would also be helpful if you were to bring in a little of your dog's feces from outside and place it on the pad, or in the litterbox.

Confine your dog until you KNOW he has to go to the bathroom, then put the leash on and get ready like you are taking him outside for a walk. But instead of going outside, bring him to the litter box or pad area that you've already sprayed with potty training aid. This helps a dog realize this is the right place to go. Praise and treat lavishly if he eliminates on the pad or in the litter box.

If your dog is still able to "hold it' despite his age, a good solution is to have a friend, neighbor or family member take the dog out at some point during the day for a short walk.

Best of luck,

Patti
