toy poodles and benadryl

Question
I have read different dosage amounts for giving dogs benadryl.
I have read that a dog under 30 pounds should receive 10 mg. I have also read that the dosage should be 1-3 mg per pound.  That could be a big difference for my two poodles.  One is 8 pounds and the other is about 18 pounds.  Please help I would never want to give them too much. The reason is for mild sedation during traveling a distance.
Thanks so much
Ann

Answer
I wouldn't sedate them with benadryl for travel period. Dramamine is much better. Use infant's benadryl, or dramamine and go by the dosage on the bottle per weight. It should be a very very small amount.
There are natural calming aids made for dogs that you can purchase at pet stores, or from your vet. You might want to consider that. Benadryl or dramamine however will not be harmful.
Just base it on weight, and dose according to the directions on the bottle.
