Is my pet overweight?

Question
I have a 2 year old Black Lab/Border Collie mix, we think.  We adopted him when he was 4 months old, so we aren't quite sure. Our vet thinks he may also have some Newfoundland or Australian Shepard in him.  If this is the case, would his weight of 85 lbs make him overweight? How much dry food should we be feeding him?  The brand I use is Verus.  I feed him about 2 1/2 cups at dinner, as he will not eat breakfast when I tried to break it up into 2 servings per day?  Is this too much?

Answer
Nicole-

I am unfamiler with Verus and could not tell you what is normal, however for kibble 2.5 cups for 85 LBS of correct weight seems just fine. A Newfie/Black lab male would be 85 LBS or larger, but a border collie/Aussie mix shouldn't be more then 50 so the breed is a little sketchy.

Here is the best way to know if your dog is overweight.

If you can slide your hands along his sides and feel his ribs underneath a thin layer of fat and muscle, as well as prod along his tail and just feel the points of his pelvis, he is in perfect weight. If you can feel his ribs with no layer of fat and muscle over them, cant feel his pelvis, or if he has no tuck (if his stomach is extended or a straight line instead of a curve from his rib cage back to his back legs) then he is overweight.
