Question
I have a 17 month old boxer who has begun chewing furniture about 2 or 3 months ago. She has never chewed furniture as a puppy and she has enough toys to keep 10 dogs occupied. She is crate trained when I am not home. She chews furniture when I am home or away from home. I have to keep her in the same room as me so that I can keep an eye on her. What can i do to break this terrible habit?

Answer
Hi Arlana,
Reasons for chewing:
Vitamin deficiency
Mineral deficiency
ash deficiency
boredom
lack of exercise
lack of challenges

Lets hit one at a time.  This way we can start to rule them out.   Vitamin/mineral/ash deficiency can be solved with a supplement.  Get Pet tabs Vitamin mineral supplement and put her on Eukanuba puppy food, (even though she is too old for it).  I have found that Eukanuba puppy food keeps young dogs from chewing.    It is a temporary measure and you can keep her on it for about 6 months and then put her back on regular food.   The vit/min pills take about 3 months to get into the system.
Boredom....Take all but three toys away from her.   Only give her three toys at a time for one day at a time.  Change them out each day so she is getting new toys each day.
A boxer needs a lot of exercise a few miles a day.  Break it up so she gets some in the morning and some in the evening.
Challenges,,, put her in a training and then agility class and choose toys that make her work for the treats inside them..
You picked a wonderfully intelligent animal, but with that comes the challenge of keeping up with her.  The rewards , though are great.
