Question
I have 2 female and 2 male dachshunds. I raised all but 1 from a pup. The other is a rescue we got in Feb 09. (Gunny)
Gunny has fit in well with us and especially my daughter. She took him to college in Aug. 09 and brought him back late Nov. when her work and school load took too much time away from him.
That is the only new development in our house. My other male who is a year older than Gunny has actually, directly peed on me 3-4 times in the last few days. Twice today. All of my dogs are potty trained and neutered. This has never happened and I am perplexed.
What should I do? and why is he suddenly doing this? He is usually a very affectionate, good dog.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
Faith

Answer
It maybe especially directed at Gunny, but he maybe serving notice you are his to everybody. It tends to be less of a problem with neutered dogs, but may still be happening.  You need to give them all better leadership.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
