Question
What should I do, if the jugular vein of dog get ruptured, including first aid and later on care?

Answer

Hi Filza,

If your dog truly has a ruptured jugular vein, your dog would have only minutes to live. Aside from applying firm pressure directly to the wound in an effort to stop or slow the bleeding, there isn't a home remedy for an injury as severe as a ruptured jugular vein.

Anytime significant bleeding is involved, you should consider it an emergency and you must seek immediate medical attention. There simply isn't the time during an emergency to wait for a response from an Internet help-line, given the fact we can take up to three days to respond to the messages sent to us at the AllExpert site.

If an emergency happens when your regular vet's office is closed, call their phone number anyway. Some offices have instructions on their after-hours phone message about who to contact during an emergency. If that isn't the case, look in your Yellowpages for a 24 hour emergency vet clinic.

Best of luck,

Patti
