Hind Legs

Question
I have a 5yr.old Toy Fox Terrier. On walks, (w/leash),he frequently picks up one of his hind legs and does somewhat of a hopping motion briefly, and then returns to walking "normally." This hopping will occur throughout the walk. I can't recall seeing this off the leash when he runs. Nonetheless, it is troubling to me.  Could this be the patella not fitting well?  Would this painful for my dog if this is the case? And, is this condition easy to see on an x-ray? THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Answer
Beth -

Sure sounds like a luxating (moving) patella.  Your vet will be able to tell with a simple manual examination.

Yes, this is painful if it's one of the higher grades, and can cause both pain and early onset arthritis if not addressed.

It's a good idea to get your kid to a vet sooner rather than later. In the meantime, keep him from jumping off furniture to reduce the stress on his knees.

Let me know how you make out
