chewing - lock jaw

Question
Hi, We just got a male pug.  He is 8 weeks old and in the last 3 days he has really started chewing.  The problem is that he is now grabbing either my sock or pant leg and he won't let go.  His jaw seems to lock and I am not able to open it at all.  I am a bit concerned by the fact that I cannot open his jaw and I am worried that he can hurt someone.  Is this typical?  Is there a way to open their mouth?
Thank you very much.

Answer
You may accidently injure him by trying to open his mouth. He is a baby and does not know how to play nicely yet. He should have stayed with his mom for another 4 weeks so that she could teach him to play well with others. Right now he would flunk pre-school.

Instead of trying to open his mouth, redirect his attention. Give him something appropriate to chew or play with. Not food as then he would associate clamping down with the reward of food.

He is still an infant and just needs time to learn. He also needs to be socialized by playing with other puppies and people.

Thanks and good luck.
