Question
I just got an 3 yr old Toy female poodle and I need to crate her at times.  When I do she barks and barks.  What can I do.  I have raise Poodles before put always from birth and they went to the crate easy.  What can I do to stop the barking.  I haven't try putting her in the room with my other two crate dogs yet.  Would that help.

Answer
Hello Juile,
I would keep her away from the other dogs right now at this point.  Her barking or whining could cause them to also whine and you don't want that.
A couple things you can do for her is to provide her with things that have your scent on them so that she feels more comfortable when you leave.  Sleep in an old tee shirt for a few nights or buy a baby blanket and cuddle with it for a few nights to get your scent on it and leave it with her when you leave.  You can also leave a radio on or the Tv for background sounds to help comfort her.  If she has a favorite toy, try giving that to her when you leave also.

When you are at home, put her in her crate for short periods of time for her to get used to being in the crate (and being quiet) while you are there.  When she goes in the crate, its like she doesn't exist to you anymore.  You shouldn't look at her, talk to her or acknowledge her when she is in there.  Totally ignore her (unless she is being quiet and then you can give her a "Good Girl").
You don't want her to think that by seeing you walking around outside her crate that she can bark/whine and get your attention.  Also, if you talk to her, or worse, go over to her when she whines, its like telling her that its ok to whine.  Go over to her only when she is quiet if you want to get her out.  Once she gets used to being in the crate and being quiet, you can think about putting her with the other crated dogs.

I know its hard, but you can do it and when its over, she will be better in her crate.  I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
