Poodle Size Registration

Question
Hi Kim,

I'm just wondering, if you breed a standard size poodle to a mini or toy poodle (both parents registered), will you be able to register the litter as purebreed?  At what size will they be registered?

I don't actually have a poodle but am planning on getting a standard poodle.  I live in the Philippines but I reckon that the dog registries here work the same way as the AKC in the US.

Answer
Hello Elmer,
Yes, you can register the litter as purebred because they are purebred Poodles, but it makes it difficult to lable them as either Toy, Miniature or Standard.  If you breed a Standard to a Miniature, you don't know which puppies will have the gene for being smaller or what ones have the gene for being larger.  Therefore you might call one a Miniature, but when it reaches its full height it is actually a Standard size.

When you register a litter, there is a time limit from the time of birth (not sure what it is off-hand).  You can register the individual puppies at any time as long as you have the parents papers as well.  When you register the litter, you will receive individual papers that you will need to fill out or give to the puppies new owners to fill out to receive the dogs registration; it is then that you would fill out their color, height, etc.

You can visit the AKC at http://www.akc.org and go to registration to find out more about it.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
