Question
I have a black that is 9mo. and a yellow that is 8mo., the are a handful to say the least. My black is just off the wall sometimes and at other times can be so good. He chews anything and everything, jumps on everyone and we do walk him. He spends hours outside with his brother playing, we go for walks every day and have play time. So I am at a loss as far as what to do? Now my yellow (at 8mo.) still has trouble sleeping all night. Some nights he gets up twice and others he will sleep all night, but not often. He was separated from his mother at 4.5 weeks so I am wondering if this may have to do with his problems. Other than that and a very screechy bark at 2a.m. he is fairly well behaved.
What do I do with them..??

Answer
It is possible the waking up in the middle of the night has a physical problem.  Talk to the vet.  Also, ask about neutering them if not already.  It is no cure all, but should help.

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
