Yellow Eye Gunk

Question
Over the past few weeks, my 1 1/2 year yellow lab has been getting yellow eye gunk.  I have to clean them out every morning.  He seems to see okay and I don't notice any redness or irritation.  I would say I started to notice it after our last trip to a local dog park. Do you think it's something to be concerned about?

Answer
You have to figure out if it looks more like "pus" or if it's just extra eye gunk.  I have a girl who gets alot of dirt in her eyes from the way she dives for balls and she'll have alot of eye gunk, but I know what it's from.  We've had a few with conjunctivitus and many times the eye was hardly red at all, but the eye gunk looked like pus.  You may want to do a vet visit to have check to see if the cornea is scratched or anything.

There is something you CAN keep on hand in your dog first aid kit called Teramycin, and it's an over-the-counter eye ointment like neosporin, which can help when we can't get to a vet right away.  Google it, you can buy it at most on-line pet supply places.
