Question
hi im alisha. i have a 3 year old female pure bred lab named Daytona. ive been having problems with her since she was a pup with pooping and peeing in her kennel where she sleeps. i thought that she grew out of it because for the last 2 years she hasnt done it but about 6 months ago my husband and i noticed that when she barks & is in her kennel if we dont let her out ASAP (with inthe first 2 barks) she poops or pees in her box then goes crazy. we took her to 2 different vets to see if she had a UTI or any problems and they all have said she is perfectly healthy.. i know people say dogs dont do things out of spite but ive noticed that the more frequently that my husband goes out into the field (he is in the army) for a few days or a week at a time she gets 100 times worse.. pooping on my floor, peeing 3-4 times a day where ever she wants. i spend alot of time with her & our beagle/lab mix pup Mia whom i have 0 problems with with potty training by the way but its about to the point to where i cant handle her anymore HELP....

Answer
These things are very difficult to sort out.  It may be stress more than anything else.  Better leadership may help.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.

If you took her to an obedience class, she might be more accepting of your leadership and do better when only you are around.  You might try feeding her if you don't now.
