Question
Hi, I have a 10 month old husky/sheperd mix and although I have had a trainer come out and work with us, I am trying reward based training and it's not working...he is reverting back to puppy nipping, and chewing anything in sight, even though he was already trained in what was not okay for him to chew...I have a tiny spray bottle about 3 inches tall that the trainer gave us as a deterrent and it is filled with citronella..this has stopped working and now he tries to attack the bottle....what I need is some advice on good training books I could read, or which method to use...I am only exercising him 2-3 times perweek and since I am not in shape to run, I walk with him about 1.5 miles...I don't know how much husky vs sheperd he is, but he looks like the spitting image of a husky with saddleback markings...I got him from a sheperd rescue when he was 10weeks old....thanks for any suggestions you can make!  :]

Answer
As a general rule, I stay away from treat based training, as it doesn't seem to hold.  As for exercise . . . 2-3 times per week is not enough for a Sibe nor a GSD, so I'd try to push it to at least once a day for physical exercise, and then step up the obedience training substantially to help with mental stimulation (and therefore mental exhaustion).

As for books, I haven't found any I really like (maybe time to start writing my own??), but the best I've found so far would be from the Monks of New Skete.  They have "The Art of Raising a Puppy" and "How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend".  Both involve training methods that are very similar to my own, and they work with GSDs, so that helps.  I would try to get a grasp on training recommended in those books, and see if you can find a professional trainer that also subscribes to similar work.
