We have recently had a male German Shepherd show up on our doorstep recently, and we have decided to keep it. We knew it would have baggage, and we accepted that. He loves everyone in our family, but he does have some alphamale issues. We don't know how old he is, but my guess would be about one to two years old. My question is: can we train the alphamale that he developed in the time he was abandoned, or do we have to live with it?

Yes you can retrain him, I would suggest private classes with a trainer who will be able to work with you on these issues.  Leadership is what he needs and so if you can establish that the adults and teenage children can be alpha then you will be fine.  Without seeing the dog, this is all the info I have for you.
