Question
I have a 6 month male German sheperd and for me he is too skinny ..I
feed him flint river ranch dog food which is premium quality two times a
day ...he eats it all but he still looks like he is on a diet or something..I've
read many articles online and they say that German sheperds are skinny
until they hit 1 year of age?!..is this true or what can I do to make sure
he is fine....

Answer
In the manual I have from a large dog guide school there is only one breed specific statement, ''Note: German Shepherd puppies typically will look very thin throughout puppyhood.''

If he will eat it, you could try feeding him a little more.  You should be feeding an all life stages food now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  With a Shepherd, you may have to let the ribs show a little.
