stopping nipping

please could you tell me the best way to stop my pup from nipping. i know he is only playing, and it dosent really hurt me. however i have a young child, who gets nipped as well, and though i know he is only playing, it still needs to stop.ive tried tapping him on the nose, as this always worked with the other dogs, but harley just takes it as playing, and then gets a bit rougher.

Hi Peter,  Yes tapping on the nose tends to not work as the puppy thinks you are playing and will just come back for more.  The best thing to do for nipping is to reach over the puppy's muzzle when he is nipping and pull his upper lip down over his teeth and push the lip back up against his teeth so that it pinches.  At the same time, tell him "NO".  What he will associate is that everytime he nips, it will pinch (& temporarily hurt) so he will not want to nip.  Hope this helps,
