Question
My 1 yr old female dachshund has been the bain of my existance since she came home.  She will ony potty on beds.  MY bed, kids, whoever.  When all doors ate shut to all rooms and no other option is there she will go on the couch.  No matter how long she is left outside she will hold it untill she has her oppertunity.  She is the sneakiest dog on earth and if a door is left open for only a moment she will find it.  We no longer let her on any surface other than the floor but this I fear has only made her more determined. I have tried Everything shot of making her an "outside " dog but I am running out of options. Excersise, special diets, pads, doggie door, crate traing, you name it, I have done it(and with consistance)  I have a border collie and yourkie who I had no problem training and I just don't know what else to do!  Please help me!

Answer
It is unusual that is certain.  I have worked with a lot of doxies in rescue and this type of behavior leads me to wonder if this is an emotional problem - that she is not a happy dog for some reason.  I got a dog in rescue that his owner said he would not stop pooping under the table or beds but we never had that problem with him and neither does his new home.  Dogs can be funny that way.  Try to think of it from an emotional point of view.  Do you think she is unhappy for some reason?  Does she get along with the other dogs?  Does she seem nervous?  It sounds like you know to housetrain and even though dachshunds are known for being stubborn - this goes beyond that level!  Dachshunds are not meant to be outside dogs so please do not consider making her one.  If all else fails you can always send her to a good breed specific rescue who can work with her and place her in a good home.  I say breed specific because we (dachshund rescues) understand the breed and their behaviors.  But first look at her behavior and try to figure out why she might be unhappy.  How long have you had her?  If it has been since a puppy then we could be looking at other things but if it is not too long, she just might be upset.  Sometimes there can be medical reasons for odd behaviors as well.  If you are unsure, you can take her to your vet to see if there is any medical issues.  Does she get upset if she is left alone?  Does she play with the other dogs and the family or does she seem a little skittish or reluctant?
